  LEGAL STATUS.

ORIGINAL LEGAL STATUS
            The present area of this conservation unit is old reserve forest (vide notification No. 882 dated 20th February, 1987 published in the Central Gazette, declaring the specified forests reserved under section 34 of the Indian Forest Act 1878.)  Further chronological sequence of events regarding this area is as under:

PRESENT LEGAL STATUS:
            The State Government, by way of notification, has declared 152.81 sq. km. Area as Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary vide Government of Maharashtra’s Revenue and Forests Gazette Notification No. WLP/1669/228601/Y, dated 3/6/1970.  This notification included 13 number of villages namely Thadezari, Temni, Dhanori, Mundipar, Kosamtondi, Dhabodi, Malijunga, Mangezari, Gongle, Murpar, Sitepar, Dunda and Lendezari of which only Thadezari village is geographically situated inside the sanctuary.  The area of Thadezari village is 113.23 Ha.  And is situated in the compt.  No. 101B.  The area of Thadezari village i.e.113.23 Ha.  is not included in the notification. Only the reserved forest area of the above mentioned villages is included in the notification.

            When the sanctuary was taken over by the wildlife wing during April 1984, area of Compt. No. 370 A. B. C. (108.1 Ha.) was handed over along with the sanctuary area.  This was the village area of Malkazari village (370 B- 26.4 Ha. And 370C- 15.20 Ha.) and Arabkasa village (370 A –66.5 Ha.) This area has been declared as the Government Reserved Forest (New R.F.) vide Government Notification No. FLD/3775/9353/F-2 dated 7th September 1977.  This needs to be included in the sanctuary area.  Apart from this new R. F. Area, the agricultural fields of adjacent Malkazari village are honey combing this new R.F. and therefore needs to be included in the sanctuary. (Malkazari = 40.82 Ha and Arabakasa = 0.57 Ha.)

            In the year 1984 Government of Maharashtra has appointed a Forest Settlement Officer vide Notification No. WLP/1684/34787/CRI/F-5, dated 21st November 1984 to settle the rights of the villagers residing the these villages.  According the sub, Divisional Officer (Revenue) Sakoli has acted as an Enquiry officer and has submitted the said enquiry report to the Chief Conservator of Forest, (Wildlife), M. S. Nagpur vide his letter No. SDO/ Nagzira WLS/945/1998, dated 28/7/1998.
          
  Sanctuary is now finally declared vide govt notification no. WLP/1098/CR-185/F-1 dt.23.7.2001.
