Tree forests

Forest in which production of timber was main object of management were included in this class. This was divided in to two sub types viz :-

  1. Moist  Type :- ( Annual rain fall above 1143 mm) Most valuable forests almost free from grazing demand were included in this sub type with maximum grazing incidence  of 1.6 Ha. per animal unit.

      2. Dry Type :- (Annual rain fall below 1143 mm). Forest incapable of producing large timber but more     important for local supply were included in this sub type. Grazing incidence of 0.8 Ha.  per animal unit was fixed Periodic closure of 3 to 5 years was fixed in addition to the usual closures after fellings.

Scrub Forests :-
Forests primarily meant for grass and grazing were included in this class. This was further subdivided as :

  1. Pasture Forests :-  Wooded forests containing enough tree growth for working of poles and fuel were included in this sub –type.  Maximum grazing incidence of 0.4 Ha. per animal unit was fixed.  Periodic closures were prescribed.
  2. Open Forests :-  Forests subject to heavy grazing were included in this  sub – type.  No restrictions on number of cattle was imposed.

Primary object of this policy was to meet the grazing demand.  Forests subject to heavy grazing were classified as scrub forests.
In Jagdamba Prasad’s plan (1940), the R.F.Os. of old Bhandara Division were classified according to above classification but no fresh grazing settlement was carried out.Villages were attached to grazing units maximum number of cattle to be admitted in each grazing unit was fixed.  Grazing incidence in heavy grazed units was increased in 1940 by C.C.F. of Madhya Pradesh.

Drive paths through closed coupes were allowed.
A re-classification was proposed by the C.C.F. Madhya Pradesh in 1940 to overcome the inherent defects in the 1933 grazing policy.  In this proposal, forests were classified as  -

  1. Protection forests

(ii)        Tree forests
(iii)       Minor forests and
(iv)       Grass reserves
